A special exhibition featuring Dunhuang-themed ceramic works opened to the public on July 9 at the Gansu Provincial Museum.

The show features 99 works by 69 Chinese and international artists, using colored sculptures, porcelain paintings, sculptural ceramics, and vessels to reinterpret Dunhuang imagery and bridge Jingdezhen ceramic techniques with millennia-old Dunhuang culture.

Fan Minqi, honorary dean of the Jingdezhen Ceramic Research Institute, is debuting ceramic pieces that replicate Dunhuang silk paintings long lost overseas.

By firing high-temperature glazes at 1,300 C, Fan used kiln transmutation to precisely reproduce the mottled textures and faded colors of murals weathered over a thousand years.

Fan said that his process departed from traditional painting styles, instead drawing from the murals' natural properties to convey their spirit and meaning. The approach is aimed not at simple imitation but at a unity of heaven and humanity, giving new life to Dunhuang's essence through ceramic art.

The exhibition is organized into two sections. The murals' ancient beauty emerges through innovative high-temperature glazes, showcasing unique patinas and mystical colors, merging Jingdezhen's kiln heritage with Dunhuang's timeless art.

The exhibition was previously exhibited at the Jiangxi Provincial Art Museum as part of the 9th Jiangxi Art Festival and the 2025 Jiangxi Cultural and Arts Fund project, attracting over 650,000 visitors.
