A news conference and ticket launch event for the international tour premiere of Ancient Sound of Dunhuang: Songs of a Golden Age was held on April 10 at the Yangpu Culture and Art Center in Shanghai.
The event brought together over 100 guests from government, arts institutions, universities, and media to mark the Shanghai debut of this innovative Dunhuang-themed production.
Ancient Sound of Dunhuang: Songs of a Golden Age, a derivative of Ancient Sound of Dunhuang, revives mural music and dance scenes from the Mogao Caves based on ancient scores from the Library Cave. An official from Yangpu district, Shanghai, welcomed the project and pledged full support.
Dr Zhu Xiaofeng from the Dunhuang Academy shared insights into how Dunhuang's music and dance is being brought to life.
Director Zhang Hua explained that the work follows a musician from western China who is exploring East-West fusion. It draws from Cave 220 and reinterprets ancient Dunhuang scores through contemporary styles. A live performance of Dunhuang music and dance showcased the artistic innovation.
The event also announced the start of the international tour and ticket sales for the Shanghai run. The show will run from July 9 to 26, 2026, in Shanghai.
