Dunhuang's cultural spaces connect past and present
In the ancient Silk Road city Dunhuang, traditional culture is being integrated into modern life through diverse cultural spaces such as the Dunhuang Book Center, Dunhuang Press, Dunhuang Foods, and Dunhuang Unbounded.
The Dunhuang Book Center, located along the Danghe River, houses over 2,000 titles and more than 30,000 Dunhuang-themed books, including the largest offline collection of facsimiles of overseas Dunhuang manuscripts.
Opening on World Book Day 2022, it offers a blend of books, coffee, and creative products, along with study courses such as mural copying. In 2025, it received 220,000 visitors. The book center also hosts lectures and book launches.
The Dunhuang Press was transformed from an abandoned waterworks. It features hundreds of colored sand bottles linked to Dunhuang-themed stamps. Visitors can use 300 free stamps and try various printing techniques, making interactive cultural experiences a highlight.
Dunhuang Foods, renovated from the 30-year-old Dunhuang Night Market, offers dining in pavilions inspired by Dunhuang murals, with performers in traditional costumes interacting with guests.
Dunhuang Unbounded breaks artistic boundaries, housing artist studios shaped like caves and using desert plants as decorations. It has hosted concerts, fashion shows, and art exhibitions, attracting artists from across China.
These cultural spaces operate on a market-driven model to present Dunhuang culture in a contemporary way.
