Dunhuang dance dramas shine globally
Gansu Performing Arts Group has brought iconic cultural brands such as Legend on the Silk Road and Ancient Sound of Dunhuang to the world stage.
During the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25) period, the group staged 125 cultural exchange performances across 28 countries and regions, including the United States, Russia, and Japan.
The group has focused on developing its Dunhuang-themed music and dance repertoire as a key vehicle for cultural exchange.
Around the 2026 Chinese New Year, it launched a series of cultural exchange events in Africa, Latin America, and Macao. This tour featured 24 performances and interactive cultural events designed to share compelling stories of China and Gansu province.
Highlights included excerpts from Legend on the Silk Road, folk instrumental performances at the Algiers Opera House in Algeria, and a flash mob at the city's landmark Grande Poste d'Alger.
In Africa, the group performed seven shows that blended local Gansu culture with traditional Chinese acrobatics. In Cuba, Panama, and Macao, they presented 10 performances featuring selections from Ancient Sound of Dunhuang and ancient Dunhuang music.
Looking ahead, Gansu Performing Arts Group plans to further innovate in how it presents traditional culture, creating more works that embody the Chinese spirit and Gansu's distinctive character while appealing to international audiences.
The group aims to broaden its global reach, advance key regional exchange projects, and promote Dunhuang and Gansu culture through new educational initiatives and study tours.
