Dunhuang's cultural and creative products sales have increased by 20 percent this year, boosting both cultural value and commercial performance. This growth demonstrates how the region's traditional cultural heritage is being revitalized for contemporary audiences.
The surge is fueled by digital preservation and immersive experiences. Collaborations between the Dunhuang Academy and international technology teams have produced detailed 3D reconstructions of famous caves and launched digital immersive exhibitions.
The world's first blockchain platform for digital cultural heritage has also been established, fostering research participation from 37 countries. Visitors can now engage interactively with history through VR and AR installations.
A series of large-scale performance arts productions, which recreate the splendors of the Silk Road with modern sound, light, and special effects, have proven highly popular.
Since 2021, these shows have been staged over 7,900 times for more than 3.75 million visitors. One notable cave-theater production digitally revives over 50 ancient musical instruments and brings classic mural scenes like the flying apsaras to life.
Product development continues to expand. Studios and workshops are creating stationery, seals, ceramics, and embroidery that incorporate classical Dunhuang motifs such as the nine-colored deer.
New initiatives are further integrating these cultural themes into modern lifestyle products, creating a diverse range of offerings.
