Dunhuang, a historic Silk Road hub in Northwest China, welcomed over 30 international media outlets and academic institutions on July 22 for the launch of the international cultural exchange season. The event marks the 40th anniversary of China's accession to the World Heritage Convention and celebrates Dunhuang's role as a bridge between civilizations.
Spanish photographer Samuel Rodriguez expressed awe at the city's cultural depth and surreal landscapes, saying he hopes to share Dunhuang's beauty with the world through his lens. Zhu Jianjun, mayor of Dunhuang, described the city as both a witness to history and a participant in global dialogue. From the golden dunes of Mingsha Mountain to the ancient murals of the Mogao Caves and the innovation of Digital Dunhuang — a virtual project for the protection of Dunhuang — the city offers a multidimensional cultural experience.
The exchange season features 10 events, including the Global Mayors' Dialogue, a desert music carnival, and an international photography week, showing Dunhuang's identity as a city of culture, creativity, and exhibitions. The International Media Alliance of World Heritage Cities, founded in Dunhuang in 2014, welcomed 13 new members this year, expanding its reach to over 50 institutions. Scholars from leading Chinese universities were also appointed as advisors, strengthening ties between academia and media.
From ancient caravans to modern storytelling, Dunhuang continues to illuminate the spirit of the Silk Road.
