Gansu sits along the ancient Silk Road and is home to world-class cultural and natural treasures, including the Mogao Caves, Jiayuguan Pass, and Danxia landform in Zhangye. Its rich heritage continues to attract global attention, earning praise from experts at the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).
Marcel Leijzer, deputy director of UNWTO's International Development and Cooperation Department, visiting Gansu again, was still captivated by its blend of history and nature. From mystical caves to vast dunes and vibrant night markets, he emphasized that only by experiencing Gansu firsthand can one truly grasp its uniqueness.
Bu Naipeng, senior project expert of UNWTO's International Development and Cooperation Department highlighted Gansu's international achievements, particularly its success in promoting Dunhuang's cultural heritage through initiatives like the Silk Road (Dunhuang) International Cultural Expo. Collaborative projects with countries involved in the Belt and Road Initiative have helped protect historical artifacts and create Silk Road-themed tourism, attracting global travelers.
By enhancing tourism infrastructure and expanding global outreach, Gansu is strengthening its role as a Silk Road cultural center. As visitors explore its breathtaking landscapes and deep history, they contribute to its evolving legacy in the modern era.
