Cultural heritage performances spice up life in Tianshui
Tianshui Malatang of Northwest China's Gansu province is heating things up, but there's so much more to this city. From bustling streets to hidden alleys, intangible cultural heritage performances add to its charm.
During malatang season, visitors enjoy Fuxi Chinese Ancestors Memorial Ceremony and lively dances. Fuxi is believed to be the inventor of writing, fishing and hunting rituals. They usually kick off with drum beats at the Fuxi Temple in Tianshui, which is considered the legendary ancestor's birthplace.

Wushan Xuangu Dance, also known as "Sheepskin Drum Dance" or "Fan Drum Dance", was added to China's national intangible cultural heritage list in 2008. The drum is shaped like a traditional Chinese fan or a plantain leaf, with an iron ring at the edge and sheepskin covering on one side.
